Kate Hofmeyr

Kate Hofmeyr is a senior counsel practising at the Johannesburg and Cape Bars. She has a varied practice with a particular focus on public law. She has appeared in the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court of Appeal, Competition Appeal Court and numerous High Courts throughout her career. She has also appeared before the London Court of International Arbitration and has been engaged as an expert on South African law in proceedings in both the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

She completed her BA(Hons) and LLB degrees at Wits University and her BCL and MPhil degrees at Oxford. Between 2003 and 2004, she served as a law clerk to former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson.

Between 2018 and 2022, she was an evidence leader at the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture in South Africa. She is also a member of the State Capture Prevention Project, housed at the New York University School of Law, which developed a report on global guidelines for state capture prevention that was presented to United Nations member states in June 2024.

 Since 2022, she has acted for periods as a judge in both the Johannesburg and Cape High Courts.
