Dr Mpumelelo Mkhabela is a political analyst who had a successful career as a journalist and editor. He edited some of South Africa’s iconic publications, Daily Dispatch and the Sowetan, after serving as parliamentary writer for Sunday publications, City Press and the Sunday Times. Mkhabela, who briefly taught courses in Political Science at the University of South Africa, holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pretoria. He qualified as a journalist with a Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) from Stellenbosch University in 1999. Mkhabela was chairman of the South African National Editors’ Forum, and led various media freedom campaigns, including lobbying against legislation that had the potential to undermine constitutionally enshrined freedom of speech and the media. In his personal capacity he regularly comments on current affairs on various media platforms.
